Who are Sixth Sense?

  • 6th Sense is a group of  children & young people who all understand the difficulties of coping with a disability. (2 Groups) We are advocates for all the disabled young people who have participated in Disabled Children and Young People’s Participation Project.

  • We are the eyes & ears of children’s services planning and the voice of disabled children and young people

  • Our main aim is to highlight issues that effect disabled children and young people from across the Southern Area and ensure that the service providers listen.

 Our Achievements so far:

  • We have presented issues to the UN committee for the rights of the child. The outcome of this is that teacher training now includes a compulsory module on working with children with special needs.

  • We have presented workshops at conferences with health, social & education professionals locally regionally and internationally.

  • Young people with complex communication difficulties have been  empowered using specialist computer technology enabling them to participate in the group.

  • We have met and discussed issues with the departments of education and social services. We also have the support of Mr Nigel Williams the Children’s Commissioner for Northern Ireland .

  • Two members of the group sit on the children services planning disability working group in the southern area

  • Most importantly we are pursuing issues in partnership with CSP

  • We have influenced the change in hate crime legislation
